Being a Patient
At the Orthopaedic Institute of Central Maine (OICM), everything centers around you, the patient. Our team approach called Core Connect Care℠ is the only model of this type in Maine. Each patient is assigned to his or her own clinical team. It means a patient sees the same familiar clinicians throughout the process and experiences true personal care at every step of their treatment and recovery. This process speeds recovery and reduces stress.
Your team manages your day-to-day care and treatment and assesses progress. At daily meetings the teams review each patient's specific needs and recovery planning. This collaboration helps everyone — care providers, patients and families — know what to expect once the patient is discharged.
The road to recovery completes the Core Connect Care℠ circle, when a patient returns to normal, pain-free everyday activity.
We know that the more informed you are about, and engaged in, your treatment and recovery protocols, the more quickly you will recover and be able to resume your normal activities. That’s why we place such strong emphasis on patient and family education and letting you know what is happening every step of the way.
For example, the specialty-trained staff at the OICM, with patient input, spent more than a year developing a leading-edge education manual. Once you become an OICM patient, you’ll be given your own handbook, specially tailored for your surgery and circumstances, with everything you need to know before, during, and after your time with us.
